H.H 4 What to do if you suspect lead paint on your house.
Question: How can I know if there is lead on my house?
Chances are if you live in an older home built before 1978 there could be a few coats of lead on or in your house. The only way to be sure is to have it tested. There are lead testing kits available at the local hardware store, but be warned they can be misleading. By this, I mean they can tell you if there is lead in a paint sample but not how much lead that you are being exposed to. In addition, if older lead paint has been coated over by newer lead free coatings, you may get a false reading. A point to know is the federal law requires sellers or property owners to give you a pamphlet and tell you about any lead hazards in the house. The law also gives a buyer ten days to test for lead. If you have any doubts about testing for lead on your home yourself, it’s best to call a certified inspector. Exposure to leads can be absorbed like other chemicals through the skin or by breathing. This may lead to real health problems for you and your family. Be safe, do the testing.
